Karma’s a bitch [short story #3]

Her trust in marriage faded the very day her parents separated. Who knew that a  year later, she would fall for a playboy next door who bullied her since they were 10.

She never expected that anyone would love her. Like, who would want to be with a girl so fat and under confident right? Well that’s what she thought before that day in the bar, while she was serving drinks, she felt a hand on her wrist, slowly tugging her and seeking her attention. She expected to find a creepy man trying to flirt but found the same asshole neighbor she vowed to stay away from, looking at her with an emotion she never witnessed.

She wasn’t used to this much intensity. She tried to retreat but he wouldn’t let her go. He hugged her and that one hug reassured all her worries and insecurities. To her it was as soothing as the winter landscape of mountains but to him it was so much more. It was his heart he was offering to the girl next door, whom he loved since the very day he saw her, but being the coward he was, he was stupid enough to hurt her repeatedly to make the feelings he was feeling disappear.

To him this one hug was his life, it broke his walls and left him bare, for her to see who he really is. That day her perception of love, of marriage, of individuality and most importantly, of herself, changed drastically. He helped her bring out the sides of herself that she didn’t even know existed. He helped her shape her identity as a young and independent woman.

Who knew people change and feelings disappear with time. He gave his heart to her, and she, she broke it the day she was able and successful enough. Karma is a bitch. He repaid for all the heartbreaks and miseries he caused all girls before her.
